Design and Implementation of Integrated Destination Evaluations to support the Development of the Tourism Sector in Peru

This consultancy mainly supports the work of the WBG Project Program: Strengthening the Competitiveness of Prioritized Tourist Destinations. The work focuses on the project's three priority destinations: Arequipa, Amazonas (specifically the Utcubamba Upper Valley) and the Northern Beaches. The Government of Peru has emphasized the need to improve destination management throughout the country - a strategic approach that seeks to coordinate all stakeholders in turning a destination into a cohesive and sustainable tourist attraction.

  • The deliverable supported the World Bank Group in advising the Government of Peru to strenthen the competitiveness of the tourism sector.

OUR ROLE

Swisscontact - Tourism Advisory Services implemented the consultancy, including:

  • Analysis of the demand for current and potential visitor segments and their key characteristics (e.g. length of stay, expenses);
  • Review of the inventory of existing tourist attractions, accommodations and other infrastructure relevant to tourism, as well as an evaluation of this inventory
  • Diagnosis of investment gaps and other key barriers to the realization of potential tourism demand, such as road and air access, access to basic services, availability of local labour, regulatory or political obstacles (e.g. immigration procedures at key border crossings), etc.;
  • Diagnosis of the management of key environmental, social and cultural assets for the destination.
