As global climate commitments tighten and sustainability becomes central to international trade, Ghanaian industries must stay ahead by addressing all levels of their carbon footprint. While companies have made progress on Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Scope 3—those generated across supply and value chains—remains largely unaddressed. To close this gap, AGI/ESC, with support from Swisscontact Ghana, is expanding its decarbonization efforts through targeted training, technical support, and consultant development through the GHG Accounting and Decarbonization Training

Background

As climate-related regulations tighten and global trade increasingly prioritizes sustainability, Ghanaian companies—especially exporters—must accelerate their decarbonization efforts. While many companies have begun addressing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, Scope 3 emissions, which account for a company’s value chain impact, remain largely overlooked despite their critical importance for export competitiveness.

To stay ahead of global standards and support local industries in making a meaningful shift toward low-carbon operations, ESC/AGI, with support from Swisscontact, is enhancing its emissions training programs. The aim is to build internal industry capacity and prepare consultants who can guide businesses through the decarbonization journey—ensuring these efforts are sustainable, scalable, and aligned with international benchmarks.

Challenges that will be solved

Despite awareness of direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2), many companies lack the knowledge, capacity, or urgency to assess and reduce their Scope 3 emissions, which are increasingly becoming key requirements for global trade partners. In addition, there is a shortage of qualified professionals who can support companies through complex decarbonization processes.

The GHG Accounting and Decarbonization Training will address this by building a pool of trained consultants who can act as verifiers and technical support experts. It will also integrate Scope 3 emissions into AGI’s existing training programs, increasing awareness and gradually building the foundations for long-term climate action across industries.

Key Components

GHG Accounting and Decarbonization Training is a capacity-building and technical support initiative that strengthens Ghana’s industrial readiness for a low-carbon future. The program is structured around two key activities:

Scope 3 Emissions Training for Companies and Consultants
AGI will conduct a 4-day training program, with Swisscontact Ghana supporting two of those days. This training will provide companies with practical knowledge on how to assess and reduce Scope 3 emissions. Importantly, the training will not be a one-time activity—it will become part of AGI’s core offering, ensuring continuous awareness and improvement.

Technical Support and Development Pathways for Consultants
Selected consultants will receive specialized training and commit to supporting companies through their decarbonization journey. These consultants will offer hands-on technical assistance, track emissions reduction progress, and help companies navigate sustainability standards. Over time, they will be guided toward global certification pathways, ensuring Ghana’s consulting talent pool meets international standards.

Vision

The GHG Accounting and Decarbonization Training envisions a future where Ghanaian companies are not only compliant with emissions standards but are also leaders in sustainable, low-carbon business practices. Through a systematic approach that embeds Scope 3 into regular training and builds a network of skilled, globally-minded consultants, GHG Accounting and Decarbonization Training will accelerate the country’s shift toward climate-resilient industries.

By combining training, verification, and long-term consultant development, the initiative positions Ghanaian exporters and manufacturers to thrive in a world where environmental accountability is non-negotiable. This initiative seeks to turn emissions management from a challenge into a competitive advantage—driving sustainability, credibility, and economic resilience.
