Building Climate Resilience: First Cohort of GHG Accounting & Decarbonisation Training Advances Industrial Capacity in Ghana

01.07.2025
Ghana’s push toward a low-carbon economy is gaining momentum as the first cohort of a targeted GHG Accounting & Decarbonisation Training series wraps up in Accra. Organised by the AGI Energy Service Centre in collaboration with Swisscontact Ghana, the training is part of a broader effort to build industry capacity for climate action, with additional cohorts planned for August and October 2025.

Equipping Professionals with Practical Tools for Emissions Tracking and Reduction

The first phase of the GHG Accounting & Decarbonisation Training, organised by the AGI Energy Service Centre (AGI-ESC) successfully concluded on Thursday, 26th June 2025 at the AGI Secretariat in North Ridge, Accra. The four-day workshop brought together industry leaders, consultants, and sustainability professionals from across the country to build capacity in carbon emissions tracking and climate action planning.

The training formed part of a larger effort to align Ghana’s industrial sector with international climate commitments and sustainability standards. Participants received intensive, hands-on instruction in GHG Protocol accounting, carbon market mechanisms, and decarbonisation strategies tailored to the Ghanaian context.

A Practical, Engaging Experience for Change-Makers

Over the four days, 20 participants engaged in interactive sessions, case studies, and practical exercises designed to bridge the gap between technical theory and real-world application. The training also served as a platform for cross-sector dialogue, where participants shared challenges, solutions, and best practices related to emissions management. Participants will be provided with a three-month post-training backstopping to undertake carbon accounting support for their organisations.  For many attendees, the training offered practical insights they could immediately apply within their organisations. As one participant noted:

Participating in this Decarbonization Training has been a transformative experience. It sharpened my understanding of practical emissions reduction strategies and provided valuable tools that directly align with our mission at Portstain, decarbonizing African ports through innovative energy solutions. I’m leaving this program better equipped to lead sustainable impact in one of the continent’s most emission-intensive sectors - Nathaniel Oppong, Founder, Portstain

Hands-On Learning with Immediate Workplace Application

The training offered interactive sessions, group exercises, and case discussions, ensuring that participants not only understood the technical aspects of carbon accounting but also how to translate them into actionable decarbonisation plans within their organisations.

Heartfelt thanks to CCG and Swisscontact for sponsoring my GHG training at AGI Energy! This knowledge is already shaping how I approach Ghana's Wholesale Electricity Market Design with climate-smart solutions. Your investment powers real change! -  Wofa Kwarteng, Manager, Dispatch Operations- GRIDCo

Swisscontact’s Ongoing Support for Climate-Aligned Industrial Growth

Swisscontact Ghana supported AGI-ESC in enhancing the training materials and delivery approach to align with evolving climate and industry needs. This support contributed to the expansion of the course content, particularly around decarbonisation planning, Ghana’s policy framework, and carbon markets, ensuring participants received a practical, up-to-date learning experience. The support aligns with Swisscontact’s long-term strategy to foster sustainable industrial growth and climate resilience through targeted skills development.

Recognising Participation and Commitment

At the close of the four-day workshop, participants were presented with certificates of participation, acknowledging their commitment to building Ghana’s climate resilience through practical skills in GHG accounting and decarbonisation. The certificates symbolise not only the knowledge gained but also the role these professionals will play in advancing sustainability within their organisations and sectors.

What’s Next?

With the successful completion of this cohort, additional training sessions are scheduled for August and October 2025, allowing more organisations and professionals to benefit from this timely and relevant intervention.

As Ghana works towards its climate commitments, initiatives like this ensure that the people driving industry forward are also the ones driving sustainability.
