Training for Building Engineers in Sindhuli on Light Timber and Steel Frame Structures for housing reconstruction

21.03.2019
The training was jointly organised by Swisscontact’s Skills for Safe Reconstruction Project (SSRP), National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) and Housing Recovery and Reconstruction Platform (HRRP) on 13th -14th March 2019 in Sindhuli. Participants included 34 engineers deployed by NRA working in different rural municipalities of the district.

The training oriented the engineers on the content of the new manual on light timber and steel frame structures for housing that was recently developed by NRA. The manual describes construction, inspection and evaluation of timber houses according to best engineering principles and practices. Many earthquakes affected people in the district want to rebuild their houses in their local housing typology which is timber-based. This training was very timely because it adds to the pool of urgently needed engineers with the required technical knowledge on timber-based houses who can now assist the people technically under NRA’s housing reconstruction programme. Altogether 64 male and 6 female engineers have been trained in timber-based house design so far.

The joint event also helped to further strengthen the partnership for reconstruction among Government line agencies, NRA, HRRP and Swisscontact.
