“Employers’ Day” held in Bogura acknowledging informal enterprises

On 23 April 2019, Building Skills for Unemployed and Underemployed Labour (B-SkillFUL) project of Swisscontact organised an Employers’ Day in Bogura to recognise the contribution of informal enterprises towards creating Workplace Based Training (WBT) and employment opportunities for B-SkillFUL trainees. The event further served as a platform to congratulate enterprises for addressing Labour Rights and Decent Work (LRDW) issues at workplaces

About 300 enterprise owners from various occupations such as tailor, plumber, beautician, mobile phone technician, electrical house wiring technician, welder, motorcycle mechanic and others took part in the event. Throughout the sessions, the employers had the opportunity to share their knowledge, thoughts and experience of being part of a skills development project.   

Mr. Md. Mostaque Hassan, ndc (Additional Secretary), Chairman of Bangladesh Small & Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), Ministry of Industries attended the event as the chief guest. In his speech he thanked B-SkillFUL project for organising the event to recognise employers’ contributions towards skills training. He termed the project as a successful one as the nation and its people are benefitting from such initiatives. Among others, Mr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Industries, Ms. Sufia Nazim, Deputy Director, Local Government, DC Office, Bogura and Ms. Ameena Chowdhury, Programme Manager – Income and Economic Development of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) were also present as special guests.

Mr. Mirza Nurul Ghani Shovon, Chairman of Informal Sector Industry Skill Council (IS-ISC) and President of National Association of Small & Cottage Industries (NASCIB), Mr. T. Zaman Niketa, President of NASCIB Bogura District branch and Ms. Ferdoushi Begum, district coordinator of Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BWCCI) also attended the Employers’ Day along with other partner training service providers of the project. Mr. Matiur Rahaman, Team Leader of B-SkillFUL, inaugurated the event on behalf of the project. 

Informal enterprises have been supporting B-SkillFUL project to provide WBT and employment opportunities to poor and disadvantaged people ever since the project commenced in 2015. Furthermore, the enterprises are making efforts towards improving safety conditions at their workplaces in collaboration with B-SkillFUL project. This is the second event in the series of 5 arranged by the project in collaboration with its implementing partners, Training Service Providers, with the first being held in Dinajpur.

B-SkillFUL Phase I (2015-2019) is jointly funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and European Union (EU) and implemented by Swisscontact. The project aims to improve the well-being of 40,000 poor and disadvantaged men and women by increasing their access to the labour market and enhancing their incomes, while safeguarding their fundamental rights at work. The project facilitates implementation of training programmes through local Training Service Providers (TSPs) on demand driven skills. B-SkillFUL also raises awareness amongst the graduates and informal sector enterprises on issues of LRDW. To that end, the project sensitises selected informal enterprises through organising workshops with support of IS-ISC, BWCCI and NASCIB.
