COVID-19: ASTHA organises online training for Community Paramedics

Maintaining social distance is imperative to COVID-19 prevention and it also presents an opportunity to make distant learning an effective solution. Realising this opportunity, Swisscontact's project "ASTHA" has arranged online training sessions for Community Parademics (CPs), to train these frontline healthcare providers with accurate and relevant knowledge on the virus and the disease.

CPs in Bangladesh are currently at the forefront of tackling COVID-19 in rural communities. Their role is vital in providing the most basic healthcare needs in the community and preventing the uprising of the disease. Provision of online training sessions, therefore, has been a very useful tool to disseminate correct information during such difficult circumstances.

The online sessions have been focused on facts and techniques on the detection and prevention of the disease that would particularly aid CPs in providing proper screening and precautionary measures to alert the community. Three consecutive online training sessions have been arranged till now, all of which have received positive feedbacks from the participants. The first session which covered general instructions on the origin, symptoms and safety precautions for the disease reached more than 2000 participants. Based on this success, two more sessions, on “Primary Healthcare Service Guidelines during the Pandemic” and “Healthcare Support to Pregnant Mothers during the Pandemic”, were conducted.

Abdullah Manik, Community Paramedic from Patuakhali, Bangladesh, says after the trainings: “I was looking for some authentic information regarding the symptoms and prevention of COVID-19. The online training sessions have clarified all my confusion and helped me understand my role as a Community Paramedic during this crisis.”
