Continued Production Helps Farmers’ Economy

COVID-19 pandemic is not stopping farmers in Kosovo from realizing their annual plans. Agropeti, a company that has as it main activity the collection and cultivation of non-wood forest products and medicinal aromatic plants and of the biggest collection centers of the berry fruits, is proactively seeking to maximize production.

A few days ago, Agropeti began planting nettles, initially in a surface of 1.5 hectares, planning to expand to other plots of land. Given the situation created by the spread of COVID-19 the company is operating in strict line with all required measures that prevent further spread of the virus.  

Petrit Shabani, owner, says: “Cultivation of medicinal aromatic plants shall also impact keeping people employed and creating new jobs, which translated into income for us and our contracted farmers. This is especially crucial at a time like this when the local and global economy are facing challenges.” 

Through its partnership with the Promoting Private Sector Employment Project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the company has acquired a drying equipment for medicinal aromatic plants. In addition to existing infrastructure and machines, this enables the company to increase efficiency of harvesting and collection. For the network of the contracted farmers it means fulfilling contracts in terms of quantity and quality, and therefore, more income.
