Colombia on the road to productive development

In February, the Production Transformation Policy Review (PTPR) was released, produced by the Development Centre of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and financed by the Swiss Cooperation through the Colombia + Competitiva Project.

The review identifies three key challenges that would lead the country to a path of a competitive and innovative nation: 

  1. Strengthening the government’s planning and anticipatory capacities to shape the future, attending the needs of the private sector to get a more stable, sustainable, pro-business and pro-innovation environment, by stablishing a think tank strategic centre to think policies in an strategic and prospective way
  2. Tapping the productivity potential of all regions. By identifying regional priorities that can trigger the potential of regions that share economic conditions, also taking advantage of the Royalies Funds to support innovation challenges, and by designing strategies that lead the country from a technology adoption process to a technology creation path.
  3. Activating mechanisms to benefit more from trade and investment, by broading the country´s participation in global value chains and strengthening the country´s quality infrastructure.

Gloria Alonso, General Director DNP highlighted the timely recommendations aligned with what is proposed in the National Development Plan 2018-2022 currently under discussion in the Congress, particularly reflected on the “pact for entrepreneurship, formalization and productivity, a dynamic, inclusive and sustainable economy” and the “pact for the digital transformation of Colombia”. 

Patrick Egloff, Charge d'Affaires of the Swiss Embassy in Colombia, congratulated Colombia for its upcoming entry into the OECD and highlighted that it is a deserved recognition thanks to the dynamism of the country, as well as the implementation of good practices. He also highlighted the importance of implementing the recommendations draw by the PTPR. 

The vice Minister of Business Development of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Saul Pineda Hoyos, pointed out that the recommendations of the review will be taken into account in order to convert the productive development policy into a state policy issue. 

Colombia + Competitiva is a project aimed to foster the country´s competitiveness by supporting the government in the implementation of is competitiveness policies, and the development of strategic sectors.  The project is financed by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland (SECO) and administered by Swisscontact Colombia office.
