Agroforestry systems for more sustainability and prosperity in Colombia

More sustainability and better cocoa quality

Duration: 2023 - 2025

Partnership: Pakka, Colcocoa, SECO

Objectives

Economic: Improving the living conditions and welfare of rural families, through improved profitability of farms and consequent increase in incomes. Increasing the added value of local products.

Environmental: Agroforestry systems leading to climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation. Creating sustainable supply landscapes with deforestation-free and climate-friendly supply chains for present and future generations.

Expected Results

Resilience to climate change increased for at least 11,533 hectares from 1,462 cocoa-producing households

Savings of 121,104 tonnes of CO2

In the course of the project in Antioquia, cooperation with local cocoa farmers is being strengthened in order to introduce climate-friendly and regenerative cultivation methods in agriculture. At the same time, the use of sustainable fertilisers and processing practices is being promoted. The goal: more sustainability and productivity in cultivation as well as better cocoa quality - and thus higher prices.

Furthermore, additional income opportunities are promoted through other crops and sideline activities outside agriculture. At the same time, sustainable landscapes make cocoa farming more resilient to the challenges of climate change and fluctuating markets. All these points combined will increase farmers' incomes in the long run and improve the overall standard of living in the region.

And thanks to the project, the climate emergency should soon be history: by 2030, Antioquia should be a sustainable, resilient, low-emission and climate-adapted territory.
