Bangladesh has made significant progress in the provision of healthcare services to the growing population. However, in remote and less developed areas communities still lack access to affordable and quality healthcare services. The project motivates young adults from these areas to undergo two years of training to become primary healthcare providers, so-called Community Paramedics. They are in urgent demand in rural areas.
After completing the programme, Community Paramedics can diagnose and treat common diseases and provide professional obstetric care. As self-employed or employees in local health facilities, Community Paramedics make their high-quality and affordable services available to the rural population.
Swisscontact supports local training institutes to improve and modernize their Community Paramedic training offer and effectively promote it among young adults.
In addition, the project works with private sector partners to establish customised and sustainable service offers that help Community Paramedics to establish their business (such as financial and business incubation services) and improve their service offer (such as continued medical education, access to referral mechanisms).
In its third phase, the project aims to anchor the Community Paramedic profession at the national level to ensure the sustainability of the project.
