Coffee is one of the main export products of Honduras and has a clear impact in the lives of coffee producers as well as in the country's economy.
In an inter-connected society, consumers around the world are showing a growing interest in learning about where their coffee comes from and how it is produced. This interest leads them to engage with brands that are clearly committed to social and environmental best practices.
In the context of changing regulations for international trade, the project supports Nestlé's sustainability initiative "Plan Nescafé" in Honduras to foster sustainable and responsible corporate behaviour and to anchor human rights and environmental considerations in companies' operations and corporate governance. Plan Nescafé seeks to build a sustainable coffee growing system that empowers coffee growers, protects forests and promotes human rights.
The project develops training modules to address two very relevant issues of the coffee sector – the prevention of child labour and the promotion of economic inclusion of women in coffee – and to develop participants' understanding of why it is important to further human rights in order to stay in business and remain competitive.
