The project provides a high quality alternative basic education with a leverage effect on the non-formal education system, enabling girls and boys aged 9 to 14 who have not completed school to acquire the basic skills necessary for integration into social and economic life.

El proyecto

The project will continue its interventions in the Dosso and Maradi regions. This second phase will be considered as a phase of consolidation of the achievements in terms of access and governance and above all in strengthening / deepening the quality of the educational offer. Ultimately, the aim is to transfer the responsibilities to local actors. To this end, the project activities focus on:

  • Improve teaching and learning conditions in the Community Centres for Alternative Education (CCEAJ) to help girls and boys aged 9 to 14 to acquire the basic skills they need to make the transition to vocational training, formal schooling or working life;
  • Improve the quality of educational provision in the CCEAJs by providing programmes and materials better adapted to the objectives of the PEAJ and the potential of the regions, and by strengthening the capacity and skills of the pedagogical support team at different levels;
  • The institutionalisation of the CCEAJ system as a reliable educational alternative for 9 to 14 year olds with a view to its expansion in Niger.

In order to ensure that the overall objective is achieved, Phase II of the PEAJ will work in three main areas of intervention: strengthening local governance, strengthening the quality of education provision and strengthening policy dialogue.


    • 15 000 girls and boys aged between 9 and 14 years have successfully completed the cycle of alternative education.
    • The communities contribute to improving the teaching and learning conditions in CCEAJ.
    • Local strategies to support young people (education and training) are being developed.
    • The pedagogical skills of the trainers are improved through appropriate further training and a more effective pedagogical supervision system.
    • Provision of educational materials that articulate instrumental knowledge in order to inspire young people to take up occupations.
    • Community centres for alternative education for young people will be included in the annual planning and statistics of the Ministère de l'Enseignement Primaire, de l'Alphabétisation, de la Promotion des Langues Nationales et de l'Education Civique (MEP/A/PLN/EG).
    • Community centres for alternative education are run by the MEP/A/PLN/EC.
