Sustainable tourism: promoting local development, preserving culture, protecting the climate

If designed inclusively and responsibly, tourism can be a powerful driver for development. Swisscontact works with local partners to develop tourism solutions that go beyond economic success: they preserve natural resources, respect cultural heritage, and empower local communities. This builds resilience of tourism ecosystems and creates long-term opportunities for both host communities and travellers.

Why we invest in sustainable tourism

Tourism is one of the most labor-intensive sectors globally, accounting for approximately 1 in 10 jobs worldwide and contributing around 10% to global GDP; making it a relevant and opportune industry to boost economies worldwide. But without care, it can quickly lead to imbalances: fragile ecosystems are strained, environmental degradation accelerates, cultural values and heritage are displaced, and limited, inequitable socio-economic benefits are offered to local market actors.

Swisscontact addresses these risks and challenges by implementing projects that are socially driven, environmentally responsible, and guided by economic viability. For us, tourism is a means to develop inclusive ecosystems; we believe in regional value creation and actively involving local populations. Because tourism is only sustainable when it benefits the people on the ground. We help shape destinations that are not only wonderful to visit, but also great to live in.

From project to impact: the Switzerland–Morocco programme for sustainable tourism

The Swiss-Moroccan programme for sustainable tourism supports the provinces of Azilal and Beni Mellal in developing integrated, sustainable tourism. Its goals are to reduce poverty, create jobs and income, and improve existing employment, especially for young people and women. Despite tourism’s economic importance to Morocco, rural regions face major challenges: outdated infrastructure, insufficient accommodation, a shortage of skilled workers, and limited high-quality services. The region holds valuable natural and cultural resources that can be harnessed to establish a sustainable travel destination. The programme actively addresses these challenges, aiming to maximise benefits for the region while minimising negative social and environmental impacts.

Our success factors

  1. Understanding the tourism value chain at both local and global levels
We understand the global development challenges facing tourism and analyze barriers within the local context. By identifying opportunities, we develop tailored solutions that pave the way for inclusive and sustainable development.
  2. Unlocking cross-sectoral impact
To increase value creation and inclusive local development, we position tourism as a catalyst for cross-sectoral collaboration, leveraging tourism’s multiplier effect on complementary industries.
  3. Sharing expertise through strong partnerships
Destination analysis and planning, product development and marketing, organisational optimisation – we draw on over 26 years of experience and strong partnerships to strengthen enabling ecosystems, build skills, enhance competitiveness, strengthen local communities and protect the environment in tourism destinations.
"The entire sustainability programme, from school to training and coaching to verification, has had a major impact on tourism in Wakatobi, especially in introducing competitive and sustainable business practice."
