It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Robert Jenny. With his death, Swisscontact loses a personality who played a significant role in shaping the development of our foundation over many decades.

ROBERT JENNY († 2026)

Robert Jenny joined Swisscontact in 1971 and initially assumed the role of Secretary General. Prior to joining Swisscontact, he had already gained extensive experience in international development cooperation and humanitarian work, which shaped his understanding of partnership-based cooperation and sustainable development.

From the early 1980s onwards, he led the organisation as Managing Director. For a total of 24 years, until 1995, he had a decisive influence on the strategic and professional direction of Swisscontact. During a period of change and growth, he provided important impetus for the further development of international development cooperation and strengthened Swisscontact’s role as a partner for sustainable economic development.

Under his leadership, Swisscontact continuously expanded its activities and developed new approaches in vocational education and training, the promotion of agricultural mechanisation, and cooperation with partner organisations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Even after stepping down from his operational role, Robert Jenny remained closely connected to Swisscontact, serving on the Foundation Board Committee from 1995 to 2007.

To many colleagues and companions, Robert Jenny was far more than a Managing Director. For decades, he regularly reported to the Foundation Board on the development of projects and programs, supported Swisscontact’s expansion into new areas of work, and advocated for the close connection between education and economic development. He belonged to the generation of pioneers who helped build the foundations of Swisscontact and decisively shaped its direction. His commitment, entrepreneurial spirit, and conviction that people can shape their own future through initiative and economic opportunity continue to resonate today.

Robert Jenny had a special connection with Nepal, a country that held an important place throughout his life and professional journey.

As part of Swisscontact’s 60th anniversary celebrations in 2019, Robert Jenny reflected on his early experiences in development cooperation. He recalled that progress does not arise from great visions alone, but from people who are willing to take responsibility and explore new paths. This conviction also shaped his own life’s work.

We owe Robert Jenny a deep debt of gratitude. His dedication, his ideas, and his personality have left a lasting mark on Swisscontact. His legacy lives on in our work.

Our thoughts are with his family, his loved ones, and all those who were privileged to know him.
