Green cities: creating greener and more inclusive urban spaces

Cities are growing rapidly – along with their environmental and social challenges. Together with local partners, Swisscontact contributes to liveable, inclusive urban landscapes. Our projects promote green jobs and income through sustainable mobility, improved waste management, cleaner air, and circular economy practices – making cities more inclusive and resilient to climate change and rapid urbanisation.

Why do we need green cities?

Cities are hotspots for global challenges such as air pollution, traffic congestion, waste and resource scarcity. In many countries urban systems rely heavily on informal workers – such as private minibus drivers in public transport or informal waste pickers in recycling chains. We work to ensure that these groups are not left behind. By partnering with the private and public sectors, we create employment opportunities that are accessible to all. Our systemic approach actively includes disadvantaged groups, strengthens local capacities, and empowers actors to drive change – building cities that are environmentally, socially, and economically future-ready.

From project to impact: clean air and climate action in Latin American cities

This project supports cities like Bogotá, Lima, and Mexico City make the transition to low-emission buses and construction machinery for cleaner air and stronger climate protection, combining technological innovation with international knowledge exchange.

Our success factors for green cities

  1. Building climate-resilient urban systems
We promote integrated planning, sustainable mobility, and circular resource use to increase the resilience of cities and create inclusive green jobs.
  2. Strengthening local ownership and governance
We enable communities, governments, and private actors to co-create solutions through participatory planning and institutional capacity building.
  3. Empowering inclusive urban economies
We foster green entrepreneurship and decent employment by supporting local businesses and vocational training in urban mobility, waste management, and the circular economy.
"Clean air is a major challenge for Latin America’s metropolises. The CALAC+ project provides the necessary tools and expertise. It promotes the use of scientific methods, develops user-friendly instruments, trains professionals, and raises awareness among institutions, authorities, and businesses about climate and clean air. This has already resulted in significant achievements, and the importance of clean air is now widely recognised and embedded in the public consciousness."
