Economic and market infrastructure development programme PDIEM

Since 2013, Swisscontact has been involved in the implementation of the Programme for the Development of Economic and Market Infrastructures (PDIEM) and more particularly in the stimulation of local entrepreneurship and the valorisation of local materials. Capitalising on the experiences of the first phase, which was carried out in six (6) communes in the departments of Alibori and Borgou, it was possible to launch phase 2, which covers 10 communes.

The project

The main objective of the programme is to contribute to rural economic and institutional development in the departments of Alibori and Borgou, which is promoted through the creation of profitable economic infrastructure. This improvement in the conditions of the economic frameworks contributes to an increase in institutional capacities at the level of the communes thanks to the income from taxes and to an improvement in the living conditions of private actors (producers, breeders, craftsmen, traders).

From 2018 to 2022, the programme, financed by the Swiss Cooperation, is being implemented by SNV-Benin, which has entrusted Swisscontact with the implementation of certain activities relating not only to the revitalisation of the local economy but also to the development of local entrepreneurship and the valorisation of local materials.

Effect 1: Markets and trade in local products are boosted thanks to the economic and commercial infrastructure built/renovated.

Effect 2: The infrastructures built/renovated in phase 1 and phase 2 are managed sustainably by the Communes and market managers.

Effect 3: Jobs and income are generated by local entrepreneurship thanks to the markets won in the construction of the infrastructures that enhance local potential.
