Cacao de Mi Tierra: Creating Sustainable Opportunities in Putumayo

Cacao de Mi Tierra supports 80 cocoa-producing families in Puerto Asís, Putumayo, to build sustainable livelihoods through cocoa production and market access. The project enables families currently engaged in illicit crop economies to establish 100 hectares of cocoa and connect with producer organisations to access formal markets. By strengthening social and productive inclusion, the initiative creates opportunities for increased income, resilience, and long-term community development.

The project promotes social and productive inclusion and sustainable income generation for cocoa-growing communities in Puerto Asís, Putumayo, one of the areas most affected by conflict in Colombia.

Through technical training, improved post-harvest infrastructure, and support for sustainable and traceable cocoa production, the project helps smallholder farmers increase the quality and marketability of their cocoa. It also strengthens the participation of women and young people, supports local organizations, and fosters stronger links with public and private sector partners to improve livelihoods and community resilience.

The project

Cacao de Mi Tierra supports cocoa-growing communities in Puerto Asís, Putumayo, to strengthen sustainable livelihoods and create new economic opportunities. The project helps producers improve their technical and business skills, strengthen producer organisations, and increase access to markets for high-quality cocoa.

Through training, organisational development, and sustainable production practices, 80 families can establish and manage cocoa plantations while improving their income prospects. The project also promotes the inclusion of women and young people and supports stronger collaboration between communities, public institutions, and private sector partners.

Implemented by Swisscontact in partnership with Gran Tierra Energy and local stakeholders, the initiative contributes to a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable cocoa sector in one of Putumayo's most affected regions.

Project objectives

The project focuses on three areas to strengthen sustainable livelihood opportunities for cocoa-growing communities in Puerto Asís:

Strengthening capacities
The project provides technical and business training to cocoa producers and producer organisations, helping them improve production practices, organisational management, and market readiness.

Sustainable cocoa production
The project supports the establishment of 100 hectares of cocoa agroforestry systems and promotes sustainable production methods that improve productivity, quality, and environmental sustainability.

Market access and business development
The project helps producers and organisations strengthen their business models, improve competitiveness, and access markets that reward high-quality and sustainably produced cocoa.

Expected Results

The project aims to achieve the following results:

  • 80 cocoa-producing families improve their livelihoods through sustainable cocoa production and better access to markets.
  • 100 hectares of cocoa are established under agroforestry systems, contributing to sustainable land use and climate-resilient production practices.
  • Farmers strengthen their technical and business skills, enabling them to improve cocoa quality, productivity, and farm management.
  • Women and young people play a more active role in producer organisations and local decision-making processes.
  • Producer organisations strengthen their market links and commercial capacities, creating opportunities to access higher-value markets and generate sustainable income.
