This partnership reflects private sector leadership in action—moving beyond traditional aid to co-create resilient, inclusive systems. By advancing sustainable menstrual health management, Swisscontact and KDII are contributing to stronger WASH systems, job creation, and improved community well-being.

Swisscontact has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with K De Igratium International (KDII), a social enterprise that produces eco-friendly reusable sanitary pads. This partnership aims to empower women entrepreneurs from Kakuma’s refugee and host communities through sustainable, market-based solutions that address menstrual hygiene challenges while creating economic opportunities.

This initiative comes at a critical time. In Turkana County—one of Kenya’s most underserved and arid regions—many women and girls face limited access to affordable menstrual health products. This often leads to missed school days, exclusion from income-generating activities, and deepened stigma around menstruation. It’s a barrier to dignity, education, and economic inclusion.

Rather than viewing women as passive recipients of aid, this collaboration supports them as entrepreneurs. Equipped with the skills to produce, market, and sell reusable pads, they drive locally led, climate-smart solutions that support both income generation and menstrual health.

Swisscontact brings decades of experience working in fragile contexts, leveraging Market Systems Development (MSD) approaches to promote private-sector innovation and inclusive economic growth. Our expertise in building scalable, locally anchored solutions positions us to deliver lasting impact.

Swisscontact remains committed to working with KDII and others to ensure women and youth in fragile settings are not just included—but lead the way—in shaping sustainable development.
