Swiss Embassy Delegation Engages in Local Economic Development Initiatives in Bangladesh

A delegation from the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh, including Sherman Sabine Rosenthaler, Head of Section Asia; Markus Baechler, Programme Manager; Rebecca Bucherer, Thematic Regional Adviser – Private Sector Engagement and Inclusive Development; and Md. Nadim Rahman, Senior Programme Officer, alongside project team members of PRABRIDDHI, embarked on a visit to Shibganj Municipality. Shibganj is a crucial component of the local economic development (LED) project, jointly funded by Switzerland and the Government of Bangladesh.

The day began with updates on Municipality LED initiatives, including trade license digitisation and the establishment of LED committees, underscoring the municipality's commitment to modernization and efficiency. Following this, the delegation participated in a significant event: the unveiling of the foundation stone for a local market facility upgradation initiative. This ceremony symbolized the embassy's tangible support for community-driven development projects, fostering a sense of empowerment and collaboration among local stakeholders. Attendees, including government officials, community leaders, and residents, gathered to witness this milestone, reflecting the shared commitment to enhancing infrastructure and economic opportunities in Shibganj. The ceremony was accompanied by speeches emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in promoting inclusive growth and improving livelihoods.

Following this impactful event, engagements continued with discussions and site visits regarding Ultra High-Density (UHD) mango production and innovative marketing strategies with the Mango Association. The day concluded with a dinner and debriefing meeting, where reflections on the day's accomplishments fueled further motivation to drive sustainable development efforts forward, reaffirming the embassy's dedication to supporting grassroots initiatives and fostering positive change in rural Bangladesh.
