During a recent visit to Chattogram, in early November, H.E. Reto Renggli, Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh, witnessed firsthand how Swisscontact through PROGRESS Project is supporting factories to strengthen Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards and workforce skills. The visit highlighted collaborative efforts between Switzerland, Sweden, and the private sector to foster climate-responsible production, enhance green skills, and promote low-carbon transformation within Bangladesh’s RMG supply chain.

Swisscontact Bangladesh was honoured to welcome H.E. Reto Renggli, the Swiss Ambassador toBangladesh, on a visit to four RMG supply chain factories where the  Promoting Green Growth in the Ready-Made Garments Sector Through Skills (PROGRESS) project is actively working to enhance workforce skills and strengthen Environmental and Social compliance.

At the “Meet the Ambassador” roundtable, private sector stakeholders, and Swisscontact representatives discuss opportunities to scale low-carbon, sustainable growth within Bangladesh’s RMG industry.

The Ambassador visited subcontracting and export-oriented manufacturing factories in Chattogram including Makka Washing Industries Ltd, Al Razi Chemical, Pack Master Ltd and 4H Dyeing and Printing Ltd. These factories are committed to improving their ESG standards and are undertaking various initiatives to achieve this. Initiatives include ISO 14001 implementation and certification, enhancement of social and environmental compliance, developing climate action roadmaps, and designing of compressed air circulation systems. In addition to providing technical support, PROGRESS is also delivering green skills training to factory staff and capacity building training of the management staff for the adoption of these improved practices.

Honorable Ambassador attend a briefing session where factory management and Consultancy Service Providers share progress on strengthening ESG compliance and adopting green skills practices supported by the project.

Swiss support for the existing work of PROGRESS is helping to expand ESG-related services to more factories within Bangladesh's RMG supply chain. It also facilitates the replication of proven good practices in these factories, contributing to a more competitive and future-ready RMG sector through localized service delivery.

Inside the factory complex, Ambassador Reto Renggli witnessed firsthand how factories are adopting environmentally responsible production and enhancing workplace safety through Swisscontact-supported initiatives.

During the roundtable discussion, “Meet the Ambassador”, Mr. Renggli highlighted the importance and opportunities of private sector investment in driving a low-carbon industrial ecosystem within Bangladesh’s RMG sector. PROGRESS aims to strengthen the capacity of local actors to enhance skills and practices, with continued support from Switzerland, Sweden, and private sector partners.

Reviewing the Factory Development Plan, the Ambassador learned how factories are turning recommendations on resource efficiency and social compliance into practical on-ground progress.
