Industry Professionals Ready to Drive Decarbonisation in Ghana After Completing Second Cohort

04.09.2025
The second cohort of the GHG Accounting & Decarbonisation Training successfully concluded in Accra on 28th August 2025, after four intensive days of learning that began on 25th August 2025. Organized through the partnership between the AGI Energy Service Centre (AGI-ESC) and Swisscontact Ghana, the programme equipped professionals with practical knowledge on measuring, reporting, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across Scopes 1 and 2.

Practical, Hands-On Learning

Building on the success of the first cohort, this round placed strong emphasis on practical applications. Participants not only deepened their technical understanding of the GHG Protocol and decarbonisation planning but also had opportunities to practice what they were taught with selected companies. This hands-on component was made possible through Swisscontact Ghana’s continued partnership with AGI, which ensures that the training extends beyond theory and into real-world industry contexts.

In addition, AGI will provide ongoing backstopping support, giving participants the guidance they need to implement carbon accounting processes and design effective decarbonisation strategies within their organizations.

Participant Reflections

The training closed on a high note, with participants sharing positive feedback on both the content and delivery. Many expressed that the combination of technical expertise, subsidised access, and follow-up support made the programme particularly valuable.

Here are a few reflections from participants:

''I appreciate the partnership between Swisscontact Ghana and AGI. The subsidy made it possible for me to attend, and the promise of backstopping gives me assurance that I’ll be supported as I work to apply carbon accounting in my organization.'' Nii Noi Kofi Omaboe- Engagement Manager - Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership

''What stood out for me was the balance between theory and practice. Having the opportunity to test what we learned with actual companies ensures that I won’t leave this knowledge in the classroom, it will be applied in my work'' Grace Amewu - Green Building officer Ghana Real Estate Developers Association

Building Capacity for a Low-Carbon Future

For Swisscontact Ghana and AGI, the conclusion of this cohort represents more than a training milestone; it is part of a broader commitment to position Ghanaian industries to take ownership of their carbon footprints. By equipping professionals with the tools to measure, manage, and reduce emissions, the initiative directly supports national and global climate ambitions while strengthening private sector competitiveness.

Looking Ahead

As participants return to their workplaces, they do so not only with new technical skills but also with the confidence and support systems needed to integrate carbon accounting and decarbonisation planning into their organizational strategies. With Swisscontact Ghana’s partnership making it possible for AGI to extend technical backstopping and create practical learning experiences, the training has laid a strong foundation for Ghana’s industries to accelerate their low-carbon transition.

The Green Economy Project
The project supports Ghana’s transition to renewable energy, thereby reducing carbon emissions and energy costs and at the same time realises the untapped potential of job creation in the sector. By capacity building and upskilling of the current and new workforce, piloting of new business models and developing financing mechanisms to facilitate investments by companies, individuals and institutions in renewable energy, the project drives Ghana’s shift toward a bright and sustainable future.
