Sustainable tourism in mountains can add to the creation of livelihoods and conservation of local heritage. On the occation of the International Mountain Day on 11th December 2021, the Federation of Authentic Tourism in the Destination Dahar (FTADD), set up with the support of Swisscontact, invited Mohamed Moez Belhassine, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, to inaugurate the hiking path of the Dahar region.

The hiking trail entitled "La Grande Traversée du Dahar" (The Great Journey of Dahar), winds along the Dahar mountain range for 194 km. This great hike is the result of three years of collaboration between Swisscontact, hiking guides, accommodation providers and the inhabitants of the region with the support of Tétraktys, a French association specialised in mountain tourism. This hiking path took shape out of more than 900 km of exploration and identification work in the region.

The hiking trail enriches the existing natural and cultural heritage in the South-East of Tunisia

The inauguration ceremony took place in Tamezret, at the starting point of the trail, in the presence of Mr. Willi Graf, Director of the Swiss Cooperation in Tunisia, and representatives of regional and local authorities.

During the inauguration, the Minister of Tourism underlined the importance of this new product as it enriches the tourist offers of the country, in particular of the South-East of Tunisia, and enhances the natural, geological, archaeological and cultural heritage distinguishing the region, as well as its local handicraft.

The first sustainable tourism destination in North Africa

The promotion of the Dahar Destination is part of the plan for the revival of tourism in this post-Covid era, the Minister said. Dahar has just been selected among the 100 destinations of sustainable tourism in the world, thus becoming the first destination of this type in the country and in North Africa. This distinction was awarded by the international Green Destinations foundation. Destination Dahar also won third place in the international competition of sustainable tourism TO DO Award thanks to its social and economic impact on the region.

Visitors can better organise their trip thanks to a topography guidebook

A topo-guide, the first climbing guidebook in Tunisia according to international standards, has been added to the website, the mobile application and the travel guide "Destination Dahar : voyage en terre authentique" (Journey to the Authentic Land). The guide enables visitors to better be able to plan their stay in the region. The guidebook with its 12 topographic maps contains important technical information such as distances, altitude differences, potential difficulties as well as points of interest so that hikers can fully enjoy the attractions of the region.

A longstanding successful collaboration

The success of Destination Dahar® symbolises the continuity and effectiveness of the collaborative actions between the teams of the Fédération Tourisme Authentique Destination Dahar (FTADD), Swisscontact in Tunisia and the National Office of Tunisian Tourism (ONTT). These activities are implemented under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts and financed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) since 2014.
