This week in Mkuyuni Morogoro, hundreds of young people stepped into a new chapter of their lives, graduating from the Skills for Employment Tanzania (SET) project’ job skills training.  A milestone that marks not just the end of a journey, but the beginning of empowered futures with new skills and knowledge about starting a business.

Graduation Ceremony: Celebration of new Beginnings

Swisscontact Tanzania, in partnership with the training provider Food Information Tanzania (FIT), through the SET project funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) through the Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania, continues to champion youth empowerment. The initiative equips young people in Mkuyuni Ward, Morogoro District, with practical skills for self-employment, particularly in spice processing and value addition.

During the last six months, these young people got trained in food processing and value addition by Food Information Tanzania (FIT), one of Tanzania’s consulting firm which support food system in terms of production, packaging, transportation and certification. The youth demonstrated during the graduation ceremony held in Mkuyuni, their newly learnt skills through cooking demonstrations and presentations of their products. Swisscontact and its implementing partners not only celebrated these achievements but also facilitated connections between graduates and stakeholders who can support their entrepreneurial journeys.

168 Youth Ready to Thrive

Over 168 youth completed vocational training in food processing, including spice-making (such as the spice mixes “Pilau Masala” and “Tea Masala”) and baking. For the SET project, this graduation marks another milestone in its mission to equip poverty affected youth with market demanded skills so that they can start to generate income.

One of the graduates, Rehema Fadhili, shared how she regained hope thanks to the training:

"What can I say? I’m truly happy today, this is a dream come true for me,” said Rehema. “I remember when I failed my Form Two National Examinations and couldn’t continue with school. I thought life had ended for me. I stayed home with nothing to do. Today, I appreciate Swisscontact, the donors, and all the implementing partners of the SET project for giving me a second chance to learn practical and relevant skills in spice-making and baking. I will use this knowledge to start my own business, earn an income, and even employ others."

Learning in Action: Demonstrations

The ceremony was more than a celebration, it was a platform for practical experience sharing. Graduates organized cooking demonstrations featuring dishes like pilau, rice, and meat prepared using their homemade spices. Guests had the opportunity to taste the food, offering graduates a chance to attract future customers through firsthand experience of their products.

Government Support and Sustainability

The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Mkuyuni Ward Executive Officer Mr. Kirion Lungwa. In his speech, he remarked:

"I have supported this project since its inception, and today I’m proud to see that our youth have acquired skills that prepare them to enter the market and generate income.”

He emphasized the government’s continued support, including linking SET graduates to local youth development funds and helping them access markets for their products.

“We have already provided two rooms for them to establish their enterprises here in Mkuyuni,” he added.
“This is a result of the impressive work done by Swisscontact and its implementing partners and donor who have tirelessly complemented government efforts to empower youth through skills development.
