Between October 23 and November 10, 2025, Relief International with the support of Swisscontact implemented a 12-day training program on Fodder Production and Livestock Management. The program included two groups of 15 farmers each, with each group receiving six days of intensive training. In total, around 30 farmers participated, representing diverse villages across Akkar.
The sessions covered everything from fodder crop cultivation and soil management to livestock feeding strategies, disease prevention, and farm business planning. Farmers also learned about hygiene and water management which are essential steps to keep animals healthy and productive.
Mona, a livestock breeder and dairy farmer, shares her experience:
“I learned so much about feeding milking cows, non-milking ones, and young calves. Before, I didn’t know how important certain feeds and vaccines were for calves. Now, I understand how proper feeding helps them grow and reproduce.”
Hady adds:
“Before, we fed animals randomly, based on old habits. Now, we know the right formula — how much protein and fiber they need. This training helps us increase milk production, improve animal health, and reduce vet costs. It means better income for our families.”
The training was transformative. Pre- and post-training tests showed an average knowledge improvement of nearly 5 points per participant, confirming that farmers gained practical skills they can apply immediately.
By improving productivity and reducing costs, farmers can secure their livelihoods even in tough economic times. And thanks to Swisscontact’s SILA project, these farmers will soon have access to local feed markets and sales channels that will create a sustainable path forward.
The collaboration between Swisscontact and Relief International ensures high-quality training and long-term support. It’s a partnership built on trust, expertise, and a shared vision: empowering farmers to thrive, not just survive.
This project is part of the Swisscontact Development Programme, which is co-financed by the Turin Foundation and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA.
