Against The Grain: A Woman’s Leadership In Sustainable Palm Oil Farming

When Risniati Br. Tarigan looked out over her family’s modest oil palm plot in Subulussalam, she saw more than trees—she saw a future clouded by uncertainty. Like many smallholders in her community, she and her husband were grappling with stagnant yields, limited knowledge of sustainable practices, and no clear path to market recognition.

But in February 2023, everything began to change. With the support of LASR and its implementing partner, Koltiva, the smallholder group they founded—CV Perangin-Angin Grup (PAG)—embarked on a transformative journey. What began as a humble Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) supplier evolved into a certified leader in sustainable palm oil, reshaping not only farming practices but also the very fabric of the community.

When LASR’s implementing partner, Koltiva, first partnered with CV PAG, the group’s 299 smallholder farmers had little exposure to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), governance structures, or the complex requirements of certification. What they lacked in technical knowledge, however, they made up for in determination.

With tailored training and hands-on field support, Koltiva guided the farmers through the intricacies of GAP and RSPO standards. They mapped over 668 hectares for full traceability, trained 26 Internal Control System (ICS) members in audit readiness and standard operating procedures, and supported plantation improvements that elevated yields and compliance.

By October 2024, their hard work bore fruit. CV PAG passed its RSPO external audit, addressed all non-conformities, and earned a recommendation for RSPO MS-B certification. This was not just a bureaucratic milestone—it marked a cultural shift. The certification improved productivity, strengthened group governance, and empowered farmers to take pride in their operations.

Perhaps most significantly, this transformation inspired a wave of female leadership. With training that promoted inclusivity and confidence, more women began stepping into decision-making roles. Risniati, once skeptical of certification, became its strongest advocate:
“Why didn’t I realize it earlier?” she reflects. “It’s given us structure, vision, and unity.”

As Koltiva gradually steps back, CV PAG is stepping forward with a plan for long-term self-sufficiency. Risniati now leads community efforts to promote sustainability, reduce resistance to change, and uplift women—particularly those navigating economic hardship.

Her vision is clear: to build a community where collaboration and learning empower women to lead, thrive, and redefine what’s possible. In doing so, CV PAG has become more than a supply chain partner—it has become a symbol of what transformation looks like when knowledge, courage, and commitment come together.
