Advancing Ghana’s Recycling Ecosystem: Recircle Ghana Holds Second Networking Meetup

21.07.2025
Building on the momentum from its inaugural session in May, Recircle Ghana hosted its second networking meetup on Friday, 18th July 2025, at the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK).
The event convened stakeholders working across Ghana’s recycling sector to deepen collaboration, share innovative approaches, and discuss practical next steps to strengthen the country’s recycling ecosystem.

Launched as a living network to advance Ghana’s recycling and circular economy ambitions, Recircle Ghana serves as a platform for recyclers, private sector actors, development partners, and policymakers to align efforts, share knowledge, and drive collective action within the sector.

Sharing Local Innovations in Recycling

Participants were inspired by presentations from practitioners advancing recycling in Ghana:

Maxwell Beganim presented on initiatives by Young Green Entrepreneurs, detailing their work in promoting youth-led green enterprises and exploring how young people can play an active role in advancing circularity and recycling initiatives in their communities.

Christopher Gyan of SESA Recycling shared the organisation’s journey since its pilot in 2021, showcasing their efforts to reduce poverty and create jobs through incentivised plastic collection from institutions and communities. In 2024 alone, SESA Recycling collected over 820 tons of plastic, with a strong commitment to expanding their impact in rural communities across Ghana.

These presentations highlighted practical approaches already making a difference within Ghana’s recycling space and opened discussions on scaling such initiatives through partnerships.

Collective Dialogue for a Stronger Recycling Sector

Participants engaged in interactive discussions on how Recircle Ghana can serve as a practical platform for aligning initiatives within the recycling sector, fostering regional collaboration, and building synergies with existing networks. The dialogue reaffirmed the network’s potential to:

  • Facilitate shared learning across recycling activities.
  • Support members to access resources and partnerships.
  • Enable practical collaborations that strengthen the recycling value chain in Ghana.

“Recircle Ghana is growing into a platform that not only connects recycling initiatives but also creates a space for practical action and shared learning to accelerate Ghana’s recycling ambitions.”

Next Steps

As part of the forward agenda, members proposed:

  • Continued collection of ideas to shape the network’s roadmap.
  • Showcasing additional member initiatives to foster peer learning and inspiration.
  • Exploring opportunities to bring in technical expertise to strengthen recycling innovations within the network.

A Community for Practical Change

Recircle Ghana remains committed to strengthening Ghana’s recycling ecosystem by providing a space for stakeholders to collaborate, share resources, and drive practical solutions that accelerate the country’s transition towards a circular economy.

The Green Economy Project
The project supports Ghana’s transition to renewable energy, thereby reducing carbon emissions and energy costs and at the same time realises the untapped potential of job creation in the sector. By capacity building and upskilling of the current and new workforce, piloting of new business models and developing financing mechanisms to facilitate investments by companies, individuals and institutions in renewable energy, the project drives Ghana’s shift toward a bright and sustainable future.
