Come January 2025, both have graduated; Milton with first-class honors in Electrical Installation. They are now part of 80% of the 76 PropelA graduates who secured employment. Milton works as an Electrical Technician at Sawarn Singh & Sons Ltd, and Faith, a Junior Plumber at Atlas Plumbers Ltd.

Before PropelA, Milton Ngoda and Faith Njiru, like many young people in Kenya, faced significant barriers to education and employment.

Milton had dropped out of a TVET institution, where he was studying an Electrical course, due to financial constraints. Similarly, Faith couldn’t continue her higher education after high school because her family couldn't afford it. To support her parents to put food on the table, she had no choice but to seek employment.

During their interview with Capital FM host June Gachui, Milton highlighted the key differences between PropelA and traditional TVET institutions. Faith echoed Milton’s thoughts, emphasizing how soft skills and life skills training helped build their confidence and resilience, enabling them to excel in their roles. Both now reflect on the significant improvement in their quality of life.

"At PropelA, our trainers were industry professionals, combining both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The workshops at Don Bosco Boys Town are equipped with modern tools, and we had hands-on experience, working individually to solve real-life problems. We spent 75% of our time in industry, and that made all the difference."

Empowering Others and Championing SDGs

When asked how they’re contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in alignment to the International Youth Day theme:  Local Youth Actions for SDGs and beyond, both Milton and Faith shared how they are using their experiences to inspire others.

Milton, a youth leader at his church, mentor’s youths, helping them navigate career paths in technical skills and emphasizing the importance of certification to casual laborers at work.

Faith, now a mentor to the third PropelA cohort at Atlas Plumbers Ltd is guiding new apprentices in their practical training and also actively sharing PropelA opportunities with youth in her community, particularly encouraging young women to pursue careers in trades like plumbing and electrical work.

"Employers are now looking for practical skills, and I encourage other young people to take opportunities like PropelA."

Localizing SDGs

Cynthia Wakio, Communications Coordinator at Swisscontact, highlighted how Swisscontact is localizing the SDGs.

"Swisscontact has been part of Kenya’s evolving development landscape, adapting our efforts to address the country’s most pressing challenges. Through programs like PropelA, we tackle youth unemployment, the shortage of skilled labor, and the education-industry gap by fostering youth employability, entrepreneurship, and future-ready businesses."

She elaborated on how PropelA aligns with key SDGs:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education: PropelA’s industry-driven, accredited curriculum is a testament to high educational standards, with winners from the program in the 2024 WorldSkills National Competition in Electrical Installation and Plumbing further showcasing its excellence
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: With an 80% employment rate for the first cohort, PropelA is creating youth opportunities to contribute to Kenya's economy and build sustainable livelihoods.
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality: PropelA has increased female participation by 22%, since 2022, promoting gender equality in a traditionally male-dominated industry
  • SDG 1: No Poverty & SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities: Through targeted recruitment from disadvantaged communities, PropelA is offering decent jobs and creating pathways out of poverty
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals: PropelA is driven by robust partnerships through a collaborative approach with over 50 private sector companies, the government through NITA, and Don Bosco Boys Town. Swisscontact brings these local stakeholders together and empowers them to lead  skills development in Kenya.

Happy International Youth Day!

PropelA Kenya – Dual Apprenticeship for Youth Employability
PropelA Kenya helps young people move from limited training opportunities and uncertain job prospects into skilled employment. It does so through an employer-driven dual apprenticeship model in which companies co-design the curriculum, host apprentices in the workplace, and recruit the graduates they have helped train. As Swisscontact’s flagship private sector engagement project, PropelA adapts the Swiss dual training approach to the Kenyan context together with leading firms such as Hilti, Geberit and Schindler.
