Projet de développement économique dans quinze municipalités de la région de Las Segovias : Family Enterprise Program (angl.)

The region of Las Segovias, located in the north of Nicaragua, comprises 27 municipalities distributed in the departments of Estelí, Madriz and Nueva Segovia. It has an area of 7,031 square kilometers and concentrates 12 percent of the country’s population, of which about 60 percent live in rural areas. The main economic activities are: agriculture which absorbs about 60% of the economically active population (EAP) of the region; then the commerce and services sectors, which represent approximately 30 percent of the EAP. Of the 27 municipalities, six are classified to be in severe dominant poverty; eight in high poverty; six are in a moderate poverty condition and only five are in the low poverty segment. Based on both official and unofficial poverty measurement surveys, since 2009, general poverty and specifically rural poverty, have shown a tendency to decrease. However, due to adverse socio-political situations and the health crisis caused by COVID-19, poverty has increased nationally from 9.7% in 2017 to 15.1% in 2020. In 2016, the Swiss Confederation and the Republic of Nicaragua signed a Cooperation Agreement for the execution of the Family Entrepreneurship Program in 15 municipalities of Las Segovias (PRODET) which covers the period from October 2016 to September 2020.

Le projet

During the first year of execution, progress was made in the establishment of work procedures within the program and experience was gained in the implementation of operations in general. Due to this we were able to determine the need to improve the program's processes, mainly the recruitment of beneficiaries, training, and the formulation of business plans.

By March 2018, the first 232 credits were granted. Later, new training sessions on business plans formulation were developed, and 333 plans were formulated and approved. However, the dynamic achieved by the program was slowed down by changes in the national context.

Objectives:

  • Developing and strengthening the entrepreneurial competitiveness of small businesses, through capacity building in business management and market access
  • Increasing the productivity of small businesses by promoting the improvement of production processes and the generation of added value in their economic activities
  • Providing financing to encourage business growth through productive investments.

Beneficiaries: 4250 small businesses and workshops from 15 municipalities in Las Segovias that carry out value-added activities.
