Inclusive and sustainable tourism development in Flores and Wakatobi to strengthen their long term competitiveness.
Tourism is an important part of the Indonesian economy and an important source for employment and foreign exchange reserves. Swisscontact has been actively supporting the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism since 2009 to strengthen the competitiveness of selected tourism destinations.
The Government of Indonesia has set a number of objectives to improve the role of tourism in the Indonesian economy and has allocated additional funds to the Ministry of Tourism for promotion. The remaining core challenges for Indonesia are: connectivity, basic services and tourism infrastructure; workforce skills and quality standards; investment and business climate; and coordination and implementation capabilities at national and sub-national level.
The rational for the SUSTOUR project is the need of awareness and capacity development at destination level and the wish to facilitate better inclusion of and benefits for the local population. Competitive and sustainable destinations and a skilled work-force will significantly contribute to the economic, environmental and social sustainability of tourism.
The project will base its action lines on the results of the WISATA project (2009 - 2018); however, the projects role is the one of an initiator and facilitator, and of a bridge-builder between the national and the destination level. The project therefore will facilitate and support, provide information and support information-exchange and information-building, and ensure the destination level is in the position to react on demands from national level. Implementation activities will build on achievements and networks of the WISATA project, by ensuring systemic and systematic implementation as well as scaling of the results achieved in the past and by building on the trust developed over the years of cooperation.
The project supports the development of competitive, sustainable and inclusive destinations, focusing on the islands of Flores and Wakatobi. It deals with the development of inclusive and sustainable tourism, with developing visions for and ownership in the national Integrated Tourism Master Plans as well as with effective management at the selected destinations, with ensuring local backward linkages and local participation. At the centre of it is the direct interaction with sector stakeholders at destination level, such as the local government, the local communities at large, the hotels, restaurants, service providers and suppliers to the tourism industry, in general through their associations, and other tourism organisations like destination management organizations. Activities shall build awareness on sustainable tourism development and enhance the inclusion of local communities and actors, strengthen these actors to contribute to the Integrated Tourism Master Plans.
