More than two million people live in the erosion-prone river areas (chars) of northern Bangladesh. They mostly earn their living though agriculture and seasonal labour. Weak market institutions and high operational costs make the region relatively unattractive for public and private investment. The project ‘Making markets work for the chars’ promoted services offered by the private and public sector so that people can increase their income. Swisscontact is implementing this project on behalf of the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and the Government of Bangladesh.
