Agriculture Finance Forum

The Agricultural Finance and Support Forum is spearheaded by the Swisscontact and sponsored by the Ford Foundation. The two organizations have recognized a need for improved cooperation and collaboration among their financial and support partners Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania mainly in the agricultural sector.

The Project

Swisscontact promotes the systematic exchange of lessons between a range of stakeholders working within the agri-finance sector across East Africa through facilitating fora. The fora capture, synthesize and communicate some of the key lessons among practitioners and sponsors. Swisscontact also supports and strengthens knowledge networks linking practitioners, through building of "Communities of practice", a network of peers with diverse skills and experience that reinforces ongoing learning. It also facilitates the exploration of mechanisms for knowledge capturing and communication that stimulate a wide range of knowledge providers and users. Where necessary and effective this involves building capacity and facilitating strategic learning alliances and the synthesis of findings and lessons on key issues.

Results

70 institutions acress East Africa take part in the forum's activities, from commercial banks, cooperatives, microfinance institutions, government ministries and non-governmental organisations.

In 2013, three fora with over 200 participants were conducted in each the three countries in East Africa i.e. Kenya on the 4th of October 2013, Uganda on the 27th September 2013 and Tanzania on the 20th September 2013. A draft second edition for the agriculture finance compendium has been developed and will be published in 2014. The ultimate results of this initiative include improved practices via knowledge sharing and improved synergies in working practices that will ensure the broader distribution of financial and support services and more efficient use of resources in agricultural financing and support.
