Vocational Education in Laos

The National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2016-2020) issued by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) calls for improvement of labour force capacity and increasing the number of qualified technicians. The goals is to increase the country's involvement in regional integration and to raise competitiveness through an increased supply of skilled labour.

The new programme supports the national policy and pursues the overall goal of improved growth opportunities for the economy by helping to increase the supply of skilled workers. Due to increased employability and advanced skills, graduates can generate higher incomes - thereby reducing poverty.

Vocational education is becoming increasingly important in Laos due to strong economic growth in the past years, resulting in a higher demand for highly-skilled workers. The entrance of Laos in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 and the upcoming challenge of increased regional integration for local enterprises further underlines the need for skilled labour.
