On 13 December 2018, Swisscontact’s ASTHA (Achieving Sustainability Towards Healthcare Access), a project jointly funded by Novartis and Swisscontact, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Telenor Health (telenorhealth.com), a digital health subsidiary established by Telenor Group. Together, ASTHA and Telenor Health will work to improve the services and businesses of community paramedics in the rural areas of Bangladesh.

Mr. Anirban Bhowmik, Country Director, Swisscontact Bangladesh and Mr. Sajid Rahman, CEO, Telenor Health were present during the signing ceremony. Also present in the event were Mr. Fazle Razik, Team Leader and Mr. Rezaul Karim, Interventions Coordinator from Swisscontact-ASTHA; Mr. Andrew Ian Smith, COO, Mr. Mohammad Mobydur Rahman, Head of B2B and Partnership and Mr. Khaled Hasan, Head of Clinical Operations of Telenor Health. Among others, Ms. Nashia Ali, Ms. Mohita Nath, Mr. Tawfiq Hasan and Ms. Tasmia Jahangir, from the operations and partnership teams of Swisscontact-ASTHA and Telenor Health were present in the MoU signing.

ASTHA has been designed to facilitate the development and integration of community paramedic services in rural Bangladesh with special attention to Maternal and Child Health (MCH), Family Planning (FP) and basic healthcare services. ASTHA’s focus is to increase medical healthcare outreach in the inaccessible rural and disaster-prone districts such as Nilphamari, Patuakhali and Sunamganj.

The partnership aims to find out scalable options for ensuring quality and cost-effective healthcare services at the rural and low-income communities. This will entail exploration of various business model prototypes based on digital health platforms to develop the capacity of community paramedics and improve their services and expand their business portfolio.
