The Myanmar Skills Competition 2020 was held from 25 to 26 January 2020 at Tamataw Hall, Yangon. Skills testing for two occupational areas, namely Cooking and Restaurant Service, was hosted at the apprenticeship training kitchen in GTI Insein, a new training facility built as part of a partnership between the Ministry of Education and Vocational Skills Development Program (VSDP).
The purpose of the competition is to disseminate knowledge on competencies, technologies and livelihoods of workers and to align with the relevant international standards.
The event was organized by the Myanmar National Skills Standards Authority (NSSA), including participants from government, NGOs, social businesses, private sector companies and contestants from 6 occupational areas.
H.E. U Thein Shwe, Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population, delivered the opening remarks, where he highlighted the importance of the Myanmar Skills Competition 2020, which will be the benchmark of the efficiency of youth labour, and a notable force of the socio-economic development of Myanmar. Moreover, he emphasised that the event was the gathering point for professionals, organisations involved in developing competencies for career development, policy makers, personnel of the vocational education sector, entrepreneurs from micro, small, medium sized businesses, and organisations promoting industrial skills.
Chief Minister of Yangon Region, H.E. U Phyo Min Thein also delivered remarks, with a focus on strengthening vocational skills development in the country as per the State Counselor’s vision. He mentioned that Myanmar, with the influx of foreign direct investment, is in need of a skilled workforce who can perform effectively and effectively. He also made a call to action to position the country regionally with a competitive edge in vocational skills.
Subsequently, the Union Minister and the Chief Minister officially opened the Myanmar Skills Competition 2020 and observed the competitions and visited booth displays.
The VSDP will further support the selected contestants in Cooking and Restaurant Service by providing training, resources and accommodation to participate in World Skills ASEAN Singapore in July 2020.
The VSDP is implemented by Swisscontact, is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and has been supporting activities for skills standards recognition in the country since February 2014.
