Swisscontact signs with Lao PDR government to support tourism development in Southern Laos

Swisscontact signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lao PDR government on Wednesday 23 August, to support tourism development in Southern Laos under the Mekong Inclusive Growth and Innovation Programme (MIGIP). The programme focuses on supporting destination development and marketing, improving the product offer in the region, and capacity development in key areas. The agreement offers an opportunity to build upon previous Swisscontact work in the region.

 

The ceremony in Pakse, Champasak Province was chaired by Mr. Bauthong Souvannasan, the Director of the DICT in Champasak, and Mr. Richard Rose, Deputy Director for Cambodia and Lao PDR. It was attended by twenty delegates from the Ministry of Information Culture and Tourism (MICT) the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the Governor’s Office, the Tourism Police Department, Industry of Commerce department, and representatives of private sector industry associations the Champasak Hotel and Restaurant Association (CHRA) and Champasak Province Association of Travel Agents (CPATA).

The MIGIP programme will run from 2017-2020 in Cambodia and 2017-2018 in Lao PDR.  Recognising that growth in the tourism sector has the potential to contribute to job-creation, revenue generation, the improvement of people’s livelihood, and poverty alleviation, MIGIP-T aims to: (1) improve services and products delivered to key tourist segments to increase visitor flow and general tourism functions; and, (2) strengthen local institutions to function effectively for inclusive and balanced destination management.
