Swisscontact's participation in the eLearning Africa Conference

Swisscontact in conjunction with Avallain Foundation were partners at the 13th edition of the eLearning Africa conference that took place in Kigali, Rwanda from 26th to 28th September 2018. The international conference on ICT for education, training and skills development, gave Swisscontact a platform to share the a-ACADEMY ICT learning model; an innovation that has the potential to support and fast-track the social inclusion of the marginalized host community members and refugee groups within the Kenyan borders.

a-ACADEMY is a digital portal for basic skills learning that was created by Avallain Foundation who partnered with Swisscontact to test the effectiveness of the platform in the provision of literacy and numeracy training as a key skill among the project beneficiaries. The pilot phase took place between April and December 2017 and involved the implementation of a digital learning solution that could be accessed in any blended learning setting. The online portal consists of two distinct sections; one for literacy and the other for numeracy. The platforms are packed with engaging and interactive activities that encompass various multimedia elements like a localized curriculum, local currency visuals, local food and locations, animations and other carefully curated and tailormade images and audios that are familiar to the learners.

Practical lessons learnt and achievements in the deployment were shared with the attendees by the Skills 4 Life project manager, Mr. Alexander Kiptanui. ‘The conference was a great place to network and share knowledge. I learnt so much about collaborative learning from my peers in the industry and got constructive feedback about the a-ACADEMY platform,’ says Mr. Kiptanui. Mr. Alexandre Boin, Director - Rwanda, DR Congo and Burundi, also chaired one of the sessions at the conference.

The eLearning Africa conference is an annual event that aims to transform the learning landscape. It gives practitioners a platform to discuss and learn about the latest trends and developments in adaptive learning, digital and basic literacy, gamification, skills development, artificial intelligence, microlearning, collaborative learning, sector specific learning and development in agriculture, health and financial services, employability, professional development and leadership.
