Sustainable Tourism Destination Management
Increasingly, after a boom some decades ago, and followed by some years of disregard, tourism is again recognized as a sector with potential to contribute to sustainable economic growth for developing and emerging countries. The disregard of tourism in the development context grounds in the complexity of tourism systems – including backward linkages into supply chains from different market systems, the dependency on infrastructure and skills, international and national mobility concepts. Success of tourism is further highly dependent of the economic situation in the tourists’ origin markets as well as on international heals and security events.
Today, tourism is being back in donors’ and countries thematic development portfolio.
Swisscontact's first experience in tourism development dates back to the mid-1990s when the first tourism project started in Peru. Ever since, Swisscontact's tourism-related portfolio has expanded around the globe and widened towards different topics.
Besides full-fledged tourism projects, tourism is increasingly present as component or sector within a project of broader economic development context (e.g. Inclusive Market, Value Chain Development, Local Economic Development, Skills Development).
