Job Fair in Hpa-An and Kayin State held on 7th and 8th December 2017

The Government Technical High School (GTHS), Hpa-An and the Department of Labour in Kayin State jointly organised a Job Fair for locals of Hpa-An and other townships in Kayin State on 7th and 8th of December 2017. The objective of this fair is to help job seekers to find employment and to assist employers to find suitable employees. The event is jointly supported by Swisscontact/Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), ADRA Myanmar/NORAD and IOM.

It is estimated that about 500 job seekers attended the event and met with representatives from 35 companies for career consultations and/or walk-in interviews. The types of businesses present at the job fair included hospitality, construction, sales and marketing, beautification, computer and office work, garment, mobile phone services and communications, electrification and mechanical and industrial related work.

Responsible officials from Kayin State Government, official concerned from sponsoring organisations opened the two-day job fair on 7th December 2017. Economic development and the creation of jobs are key priorities for the Kayin State Government, which works with both local and international organisations to achieve these targets. In this context the Kayin State Government organised an Investment Fair in November 2017 to encourage local and foreign investors to invest in Kayin State. At the same time, the Government cooperates with the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Social Welfare, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Border Affairs and INGOs such as Swisscontact/IOM and ADRA Myanmar to support vocational skills development to facilitate employment for both men and women across Kayin State.

Over the past few years, public and INGOs training providers such as Swisscontact/IOM and ADRA Myanmar have delivered numerous vocational courses in Hpa-An as well as in other locations in Kayin State and have trained many people. These vocational training courses provide the required skills for beneficiaries to enter the labour market and to have access to employment opportunities. Many of the graduates from these courses were present at the job fair and were hopefully able to present themselves to potential employers and find a job.
